We think with the objects we love, we love with the objects we think with.
- Sherry Turkle

We are touched by what is near. Things affect us, and in affecting us, they take shape.
Affect is a form of orientation: we move toward or away from objects depending on how they touch us. It drifts, clings, persists. Being touched can endure even through the comings and goings of things. The connection is fragile—it fades easily, sometimes on its own, by the very way it arrives. It orients us toward objects, and in that turning, something is created—we create. This is how we learn: how what matters comes to matter.
Objects play multiple and shifting roles. They often hold us precisely at the moment they enter our lives. Some possess an unsettling quality: not the strangest or most feared, but the familiar that feels slightly “off.” That misalignment marks a complex boundary—it both draws and repels us.No object, body, or space is sacred in itself. Any element can connect to another if a common language, an adequate code, exists. Some objects move us because they guide us toward blurred thresholds between self and other. Liminal times, as Sherry Turkle calls them, are charged with creative possibility. These transient spaces ignite our affective relationship with objects, the
building of timeless shelters, and the possibility of reimagining the fragments that make us who we are.
We learn to make by making with what is broken: the idea of fragility already fragilizes. The more care we take, the more our
hands tremble. We build with the remnants of stories that sustain us, on what has already hardened, on walls we have
inherited. And yet, these shelters are vulnerable. They must be. Only in vulnerability can we act. Only when that protection
crumbles can we gather the fragments. And in that reconstruction lies what is essential.
